This game includes a feature to obtain armor and items from TV remote signals. According to the official guidebook, there are four variations of reward tables (A-D) determined by the signal. When the infrared device is a TV remote, the reward is always a Type D item.

Thanks for the detailed report! There are a number of other games that don't quite work well with the current implementation of random IR pulses (e.g. Issue #160). The plan is to recreate a generic NEC TV remote someday and have that as a selectable IR device. I suspect a lot of games were designed around those kinds of remotes, so hopefully it will help.

The NEC IR protocol is well documented, it's just been somewhat low-priority for a while now. That may change soon. Since there is no more undocumented Game Boy hardware that I need to look into, I now have time to focus on other areas like this. No guarantees, but I'll definitely try to get something done sooner rather than later.
