Some Rust build directories can be multiple gigabytes in size, and if you use `cargo mutants -j` there will be several directories of that size. Be careful that the ramdisk does not use so much memory that it causes the system to swap.

## Platform security scanning

Security software can inspect the many files and processes created during
mutation testing, which can noticeably slow down a run.

On Windows, consider using a [Dev Drive and its performance
mode](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/dev-drive/) for trusted source,
`CARGO_HOME`, and target directories. If Dev Drive is unavailable, Windows
Security exclusions for those specific directories can provide a similar
benefit. Weigh the security implications before adding exclusions, and do not
disable antivirus protection globally.

On macOS, XProtect and Gatekeeper checks can also slow down repeated test
execution. Follow the [nextest macOS
guidance](https://nexte.st/docs/installation/macos/) to allow your terminal in
Developer Tools. This avoids disabling system protections globally.

## Using faster linkers

Because cargo-mutants does many incremental builds, link time is important, especially if the test suite is relatively fast.
