USB Boot Enabler

Quickly enable USB boot on Raspberry Pi OS drives. When the Pi boots from the modified drive, it sets the OTP bit to permanently enable USB boot.

Quick Install & Run

pip install git+https://github.com/the-Drunken-coder/USB-Boot-Enabler.git
usb-boot-enabler

Or run directly without installing:

pip install git+https://github.com/the-Drunken-coder/USB-Boot-Enabler.git && usb-boot-enabler

What It Does

  1. Scans your computer for drives with Raspberry Pi OS
  2. Shows detected drives with their Pi model and current USB boot status
  3. Lets you pick a drive to modify
  4. Adds program_usb_boot_mode=1 to config.txt
  5. Creates a backup of the original config

After Running

  1. Safely eject the drive
  2. Insert it into your Raspberry Pi
  3. Boot the Pi - the OTP bit will be programmed
  4. Your Pi can now boot from USB devices!

Supported Pi Models

  • Pi 3 / Pi 2 v1.2: Sets permanent OTP bit for USB boot
  • Pi 4 / Pi 5: USB boot is handled by EEPROM (this tool still works but isn't required)

Requirements

  • Windows (uses Windows drive detection)
  • Python 3.10+
  • Admin rights may be needed to write to the drive
