Blackwall LLM Shield

Security middleware for Node.js and Next.js LLM apps. Blocks prompt injection, masks PII, inspects outputs, and gates agent tools in JavaScript runtimes.

New Capabilities

Context-aware jailbreak detection

detectPromptInjection() now inspects decoded base64 and hex payloads, normalizes leetspeak, and adds semantic jailbreak signals on top of regex matches.

Shadow mode and A/B policy testing

Use shadowMode with shadowPolicyPacks or comparePolicyPacks to record what would have been blocked without interrupting traffic.

Provider adapters and stable wrappers

Use createOpenAIAdapter(), createAnthropicAdapter(), createGeminiAdapter(), or createOpenRouterAdapter() with protectWithAdapter() when you want Blackwall to wrap the provider call end to end.

Controlled-pilot rollout

The current recommendation for enterprise teams is a controlled pilot first: start in shadow mode, aggregate route-level telemetry, tune suppressions explicitly, then promote the cleanest routes to enforcement.

Observability and control-plane support

Use summarizeOperationalTelemetry() with emitted telemetry events when you want route-level summaries, blocked-event counts, and rollout visibility for operators.

Enterprise deployments can also enrich emitted events with SSO/user context and forward flattened records to Power BI or other downstream reporting systems.

Output grounding and tone review

OutputFirewall can compare responses against retrieved documents and flag hallucination-style unsupported claims or unprofessional tone.

Autonomous governance and agent security

Use IntentSovereigntyEngine to detect reasoning drift and trigger a cognitive lock before a tool call happens. Pair CrossModalConsistencyGuard with ImageMetadataScanner and VisualInstructionDetector when your app ingests screenshots, OCR, alt text, or other perceptual inputs that may carry indirect instructions.

For autonomous agents, combine AgentIdentityRegistry, MCPSecurityProxy, and task-scoped passports so tools verify what the agent is allowed to do instead of trusting the model's final text alone. Use AdaptiveThreatMesh to export and import decaying signatory antigens across deployments, and run BehavioralChaosEngineer to continuously red-team your current shield configuration under controlled failure scenarios.

For stateful business workflows, add WorkflowStateGuard to ToolPermissionFirewall so high-impact actions like transfers, sends, or deletes require prior approvals, recorded sequence steps, and evidence keys before execution is even considered.

Lightweight integrations

Use createExpressMiddleware(), createLangChainCallbacks(), or createLlamaIndexCallback() to drop Blackwall into existing app and orchestration flows faster.

Core Building Blocks

BlackwallShield

Use it to sanitize inbound messages, mask sensitive data, score prompt-injection risk, and decide whether the request should continue to the model provider.

It also exposes protectModelCall(), protectJsonModelCall(), protectWithAdapter(), and reviewModelResponse() so you can enforce request checks before provider calls and review outputs before they go back to the user.

OutputFirewall

Use it after the model responds to catch leaked secrets, dangerous code patterns, and schema regressions before returning output to the user or agent runtime.

ToolPermissionFirewall

Use it to allowlist tools, block disallowed tools, validate arguments, and require approval for risky operations.

It can also integrate with ValueAtRiskCircuitBreaker for high-value actions and ShadowConsensusAuditor for secondary logic review before sensitive tools execute.

RetrievalSanitizer

Use it before injecting retrieved documents into context so hostile instructions in your RAG data store do not quietly become model instructions.

Contract Stability

The 0.2.x line treats guardModelRequest(), protectWithAdapter(), reviewModelResponse(), ToolPermissionFirewall, and RetrievalSanitizer as the long-term integration contracts. The exported CORE_INTERFACES map can be logged or asserted by applications that want to pin expected behavior.

Next.js App Router plus Gemini pattern

For App Router route handlers, the cleanest production shape is:

  • parse the request in app/api/.../route.ts
  • use preset: 'shadowFirst' or a route-specific preset like agentPlanner or documentReview
  • attach route, feature, and tenantId metadata
  • wrap the Gemini SDK call with createGeminiAdapter() plus protectWithAdapter()
  • ship report.telemetry and onTelemetry into a route-level log sink

That keeps request guarding, output review, and operator reporting in one path without scattering policy logic across the route.

False-positive tuning

  • Start with route-level shadowMode: true
  • Add suppressPromptRules only per route, not globally, so the reason for each suppression stays obvious
  • Log report.promptInjection.matches and report.telemetry.promptInjectionRuleHits to explain why a request was flagged
  • Review summary.noisiestRoutes, summary.byFeature, and summary.weeklyBlockEstimate before raising enforcement

TypeScript

The package now ships first-class declaration files for the main entry point plus integrations, providers, and semantic subpaths, so local declaration shims should no longer be necessary in TypeScript apps.

Included Examples

For Next.js, the most production-real patterns are App Router route handlers, server actions for trusted internal mutations, and streaming endpoints that apply output review to assembled or final chunks instead of raw intermediate tokens.

For Gemini-heavy apps, the bundled adapter now preserves system instructions plus mixed text/image/file parts so App Router handlers can wrap direct @google/generative-ai calls with less translation glue.

Enterprise Adoption Notes

  • A controlled pilot is a good fit today when you want shadow-mode prompt and output protection without forcing hard blocking on every route immediately.
  • If you prefer not to depend on Blackwall directly everywhere, wrap it behind your own internal model-security abstraction and expose only the contract your app teams need.
  • For broader approval, focus rollout reviews on false-positive rates, noisiest routes, and latency budgets alongside jailbreak coverage.
  • For executive or staff-facing workflows, always attach authenticated identity metadata so telemetry can answer which user triggered which risky request or output event.
  • For high-impact agentic workflows, combine tool approval, VaR limits, digital-twin tests, and signed agent passports instead of relying on a single detector.

  • Add regression prompts for instruction overrides, prompt leaks, token leaks, and Australian PII samples so upgrades stay safe.
  • Expect some latency increase from grounding checks, output review, and custom detectors; benchmark with your real prompt and response sizes before enforcing globally.
  • For agent workflows, keep approval-gated tools and route-specific presets separate from end-user chat routes so operators can see distinct risk patterns.
