[Git] Exception: Nothing to commit #13

Description

@ThiloteE

JabRef 6.0-alpha2.893--2025-10-17--380729f
Windows 10 10.0 amd64
Java 24.0.2
JavaFX 25+29

Hi Wanling, I saw that your recent PR got merged, so I tried the Git feature today and got an error for "Git Commit":

org.jabref.logic.JabRefException: Nothing to commit.
	at org.jabref/org.jabref.gui.git.GitCommitDialogViewModel.doCommit(GitCommitDialogViewModel.java:119)
	at org.jabref/org.jabref.gui.git.GitCommitDialogViewModel.lambda$commitTask$0(GitCommitDialogViewModel.java:78)

Breaks JabRef#13743.

The thing is, that I DID have changes in the library file, so there should have been something to commit. There were two new entries.

If it helps: I set up Git without JabRef. Currently, I only use it for version control locally. There is no remote origin.

    Is this something expected?

Ok, it DID get commited. Somehow.

    What I did:

I had Git open in cmd.
    I had JabRef open.

    1. I triggered commit in JabRef. --> Exception in JabRef triggered - nothing ot commit.
    2. I opened git gui. Showed I had diff.
    3. I closed JabRef and Git Gui.
    4. I opened JabRef.
    5. I saved the library, because the library always shows something has changed, when opening JabRef.
    6. I tried to do a Git Commit from within JaBref --> it said there was nothing to commit.
    7. I did a git status and it said nothing to commit, working tree clean.
    8. I opened git gui and no diff. I visualized Masters history and it showed that there was a commit!

    My hypotheses:

    1. either the commit was done the first time I tried git commit, but the exception erroneously poped
    2. or the commit was done automatically after I restarted JabRef and clicked the "save library" button.
    3. or the commit was done after I restarted JabRef and clicked git commit, but this time there was no exception.
  3. moved this from Backlog to In progress in Git Support for JabRef Roadmapon Oct 24, 2025
