Summary

  • Removes DeepCitation/SDK_VERSION and all prompt value exports from the root deepcitation entry so browser bundles no longer pay for the API client or large prompt strings (~21 KB raw) on import 'deepcitation'
  • Main entry gzip drops from ~20 KB → ~10–11 KB (~45–50% reduction)
  • Broke the hidden citationPrompts.ts → textCleanup.ts shared-chunk dependency (which kept prompts in the main bundle even after removing their exports) by inlining two trivial regex constants
  • DeepCitation class is now only reachable via deepcitation/client; prompt constants and wrappers only via deepcitation/prompts
  • Updated all JSDoc examples, integration snippets, and tests to use correct subpath imports
  • Updated basic-verification example: split imports, add direct URL/file-path CLI arg support, deduplicateCloseMarkers for HTML reports, verifiedSourceContext field with legacy fallback

BREAKING CHANGE: import { DeepCitation } from "deepcitation", import { SDK_VERSION } from "deepcitation", and import { wrapCitationPrompt } from "deepcitation" no longer work — use deepcitation/client for DeepCitation and SDK_VERSION, and deepcitation/prompts for prompt utilities.

Test plan

  • npm run build — confirm lib/index.js no longer imports the prompts chunk
  • npm test — 88 suites, 2316 tests pass
  • npm run size — main entry gzip should be ~10–11 KB (was ~20 KB)
  • npm run lint — no lint errors
  • Verify import { DeepCitation } from "deepcitation/client" still works
  • Verify import { wrapCitationPrompt } from "deepcitation/prompts" still works
  • Verify import { extractVisibleText } from "deepcitation" still works (core helpers unchanged)

Remove `DeepCitation`/`SDK_VERSION` and all prompt value exports from
`src/index.ts` so the main `deepcitation` entry no longer pulls the
API client or the large prompt strings (~21 KB raw) into the transitive
closure of browser bundles.

- `DeepCitation` class is now only reachable via `deepcitation/client`
- Prompt constants and wrappers are only reachable via `deepcitation/prompts`
- Broke the `citationPrompts.ts → textCleanup.ts` shared-chunk link by
  inlining two trivial regex constants, eliminating the cross-chunk
  dependency that kept the prompts chunk in the main bundle
- Updated JSDoc examples and integration-snippet strings to use the
  correct subpath entry points
- Updated `index.test.ts` and `integrationSnippets.test.ts` to match

Main entry gzip: ~20 KB → ~10–11 KB (~45–50 % reduction)

BREAKING CHANGE: `import { DeepCitation } from "deepcitation"` and
`import { wrapCitationPrompt } from "deepcitation"` no longer work.
Use `deepcitation/client` and `deepcitation/prompts` respectively.

Code Review — PR #420: Decouple client/prompts from main entry

Overall this is a solid, well-scoped perf win. The bundle reduction rationale is clear, the test updates are consistent, and the inlining approach to break the shared-chunk dependency is pragmatic. A few issues worth addressing before merge:

🐛 deduplicateCloseMarkers — silent marker removal may confuse

examples/basic-verification/src/html-report.ts

The function silently removes duplicate [N] markers within 150 chars. Two concerns:

  1. Console output inconsistency: deduplication only applies to the HTML report. The console path (in shared.ts) still shows the raw, non-deduplicated text. Users comparing the two will see different citation counts.

  2. Non-configurable window: the default window = 150 is hardcoded with no way for callers to opt out. Consider making deduplication opt-in via generateHtmlReport's options bag rather than always-on:

🐛 LegacyVerification type defined inside the loop body

Type aliases are erased at runtime, so no real perf cost, but defining a type inside a loop is confusing. Move it above the loop alongside the verifications declaration.

⚠️ CITATION_DATA_START_DELIMITER / CITATION_DATA_END_DELIMITER moved — AGENTS.md invariant affected

The AGENTS.md invariant says: "Strip <<<CITATION_DATA>>> before displaying model output." These delimiter constants are the canonical way to implement that strip. They were previously importable from deepcitation; they now only live in deepcitation/prompts.

The breaking change note covers this, but it's worth adding an explicit call-out in the changelog/migration guide since it touches a safety-critical invariant (leaking raw citation data to users).

✅ Regex inlining in citationPrompts.ts

The inlined _PAGE_NUMBER_RE and _LINE_ID_RE match the originals in textCleanup.ts. The underscore prefix clearly signals module-private. The comment explaining why they were inlined is excellent — leave it.

✅ stepWrapPrompts signature change

Switching from deepTextPages: string[] to step1: Pick<Step1Result, "attachmentId" | "deepTextPages"> is the right call — the function needed the attachment ID anyway and the old signature was papering over that with implicit coupling.

✅ CLI argument URL/path detection

The IIFE + existsSync fallback priority (URL → path → index → "all") is correct and the order is intentional. Extension-based image detection calls .toLowerCase() so casing is handled.

Nit: scripts/review_extract.py field fallback order

anchor = c.get("sourceMatch", "") or c.get("anchorText", "")
full_phrase = c.get("sourceContext", "") or c.get("fullPhrase", "")

dict.get(key, "") returns "" (falsy) when the key is missing, so or correctly falls through to the legacy field. Just confirm that an empty string value for sourceMatch should also fall back to anchorText — if a verified citation can legitimately have sourceMatch: "", the fallback is silently masking it.

Summary: LGTM with the deduplicateCloseMarkers opt-in and LegacyVerification placement addressed. The breaking change is unavoidable for the bundle goal and the migration path is clear.

The safety timer in useEffect([isOpen, popoverViewState]) was calling
clamp with skipVertical=false on every transition, including page→focus.
When the user had scrolled the popover above the viewport, guardClamp
returned a large positive dy that visibly pulled the element back into view.

Fix: introduce isViewStateTransitionRef (written by the sibling
useLayoutEffect before prevViewStateRef is updated, readable in useEffect
because layout effects flush before passive effects). The safety timer now
passes skipVertical=true on view-state transitions so vertical position is
left alone; the ResizeObserver path handles ongoing repositioning when the
popover should stay visible.

Also remove the now-unnecessary skipVertical=true guard in the immediate
useLayoutEffect clamp for isViewStateChange: View Transitions capture the
DOM snapshot before this fires, so the live element's translate during VT
playback is invisible — the one-time full clamp is safe and prevents
expanded-keyhole content from overshooting above the viewport.

The bundle optimization goal is clear and well-executed. The approach of moving the API client and large prompt strings out of the main entry is sound, and the test/doc coverage is thorough. A few issues to address before merging:

Bug: docs/frameworks/agui.md still imports DeepCitation from main entry

Subtle behavioral change in inlined regex (citationPrompts.ts)

The old code:

removeLineIdMetadata(removePageNumberMetadata(page))

The new code:

page.replace(_PAGE_NUMBER_RE, "").trim().replace(_LINE_ID_RE, "")

A .trim() has been inserted between the two replacements that wasn't there before. This changes the output when a page string has leading/trailing whitespace after page-number tag removal. For deep-text pages this is likely harmless, but it's a silent behavioral change that could affect text alignment in edge cases. Either confirm it's intentional (and note it in the comment) or remove it to stay equivalent.

SDK_VERSION removal not called out in the breaking change section

SDK_VERSION is removed from src/index.ts alongside DeepCitation, but the BREAKING CHANGE notice in the PR description only mentions DeepCitation and wrapCitationPrompt. Anyone importing SDK_VERSION from "deepcitation" will hit a silent runtime undefined. Worth adding to the breaking-changes list and documenting where it can now be found (or that it's gone).

deduplicateCloseMarkers — magic constant and ordering

The window = 150 default is undocumented:

docs/types.md documents fields not introduced in this PR

Three fields are added to the Verification interface docs: skipped, isImpreciseLocation, and llmAttempts. These don't appear to be type changes introduced in this diff. If they're being documented retroactively, that's fine — but it's worth confirming they're already in the compiled TypeScript types so the docs don't get ahead of the implementation.

Minor: canonical-exports.md removes buildProofUrl()

The table entry for buildProofUrl() is removed, but there's no corresponding source change removing or moving the function. If this function still exists at src/rendering/proofUrl.ts, the doc removal is incorrect.

  • The inlining rationale in citationPrompts.ts is well-commented — easy to understand why the shared-chunk dependency had to be broken.
  • The stepWrapPrompts signature change (from raw deepTextPages[] to Pick<Step1Result, "attachmentId" | "deepTextPages">) is a clean API improvement that enables multi-attachment keying.
  • scripts/review_extract.py backward-compat handling (sourceMatch with anchorText fallback) is solid, and the regression test class is thorough.
  • The useViewportBoundaryGuard comment block for isViewStateTransitionRef clearly explains the layout-effect ordering guarantee — this kind of cross-effect communication is easy to get wrong and the reasoning is documented.
  • Test updates consistently reflect the new import paths throughout.

The agui.md bug is a ship blocker; the rest are minor issues or documentation questions.

Not a bug — .trim() behavioral change: The old removePageNumberMetadata already called .trim() internally (see src/utils/textCleanup.ts in the pre-PR commit). The inlined page.replace(_PAGE_NUMBER_RE, "").trim() is byte-for-byte equivalent.

Not a bug — buildProofUrl() doc removal: src/rendering/proofUrl.ts no longer exists in the codebase (confirmed via grep). The canonical-exports entry was a dangling pointer; removing it is correct.

Not a bug — docs/types.md fields: skipped, isImpreciseLocation, and llmAttempts already exist in the compiled types — llmAttempts is populated in DeepCitation.ts:1009, skipped is a status value from statusRegistry.ts:95. The docs are accurate.
