Chunk

WS-ARCH-001-CP02: Hidden Adapter-Binding Behavior.

Goal and approved intent

Implement CON-owned, route-unreachable create/read/suspend/resume behavior for
project compensation adapter bindings. Keep production deny-default and all
four AUTH actions planned/unavailable until CP03 installs the real owner and
authorization adapters.

What changed and why

  • Added immutable public CON requests, results, views, and authorization ports.
  • Added public PROJECTS and ACTORS eligibility ports without private imports.
  • Added CON repository/service orchestration with PostgreSQL advisory operation
fencing, exact authorized recovery, row locking, and concealed conflicts.
  • Added migration 0004 with immutable contiguous lifecycle-event history,
attribution guards, one-active-binding constraints, and empty-table-only
    upgrade protection.
  • Added focused unit, PostgreSQL, concurrency, boundary, ownership, reset, and
Alembic tests; split fixtures and test doubles into named files so no test
file reaches 500 lines or shadows repository pytest configuration.
  • Reconciled ARCH, CON, roadmap, and current-state records because CP03 is the
next activation gate after this merge.

Design chosen

Every mutation follows one order: root transaction, canonical digest,
transaction-scoped operation fence, recovery, owner/product locks, AUTH
prepare/consume/close, product mutation, lifecycle event, and flush. Exact
duplicates may return the immutable original result only after current read
authorization. Any mismatch or denied read returns one concealed conflict and
performs no second mutation authorization or effect.

PROJECTS then ACTORS eligibility fences are retained through create and resume.
Suspend remains possible after owner ineligibility so authorized operators can
disable a binding. CP02 test proof uses an explicit test-only eligibility
marker; existing service identities and unmarked human actors cannot
substitute. CP03 owns
the real compensation-adapter identity rule and AUTH composition.

Alternatives rejected

  • Raw role checks or a CON-local authorization evaluator.
  • Imports from AUTH, PROJECTS, or ACTORS private implementation modules.
  • Generic service eligibility or reuse of ART/REV identities.
  • Mutation retry without an operation fence and current read authorization.
  • Mutable or best-effort lifecycle history.
  • Compatibility paths for retired fact names or lifecycle behavior.

Scope control and product behavior

No route, evaluator, grant, service matrix row, production service identity,
action activation, ContributionPolicy behavior, retirement, fulfillment,
callback, delivery, provider call, or credential behavior is added. The hidden
service defaults to denial, so production behavior remains unavailable.

Acceptance criteria proof

Focused tests prove contiguous create/suspend/resume history; immutable event
and binding identity; exact duplicate recovery for all mutations; mismatch and
read-denial concealment; one-effect concurrency; owner ineligibility before
AUTH; retained project and actor locks; close-before-mutation failure; copied,
replayed, closed, or wrong-transaction fake PREP rejection; no existing ART or
human identity substitution; and deny-default production composition.

Tests and checks run

  • Ruff on all touched backend modules and tests: pass.
  • Focused non-database CP02 and AUTH registration tests: pass.
  • Canonical semantic-lane collection: pass.
  • Module, authorization, test-structure, and behavior-ownership gates: pass.
  • Stale wording, changed Markdown links, chunk-state synchronization, and
    git diff --check: pass.
  • PostgreSQL behavior, migration, reset, semantic lanes, and repository-wide
coverage are proven by mandatory hosted GitHub checks, not a local full run.

Test delta and CI integrity

The superseded 03A deny-all-update and raw-table race tests were replaced by
service-bound lifecycle, advisory-lock, recovery, and database-guard tests. No
skip, xfail, omission, threshold reduction, workflow bypass, or coverage
weakening was introduced. Repository coverage floors remain unchanged.

Reviewer results

Architecture, security, product/operations, QA, test-delta, CI-integrity,
reuse/dedup, senior-engineering, and documentation reviews are recorded in the
implementation review evidence. Valid findings were fixed; low risks are
carried to CP03 where the real adapters and identity are installed.

External review

The planning-stage external findings and their validated disposition remain in
WS-ARCH-001-CP02-external-review-response.md. Implementation-head GitHub and
CodeRabbit findings must be replayed against the code before any fix. GitHub's
live exact-head checks are the authority for transient status.

Remaining risks and follow-up

CP02 deliberately proves hidden behavior with deny-default production
composition and strict test adapters. CP03 must install the real AUTH PREP,
PROJECTS, and ACTORS adapters; register the approved compensation service
identity; repeat real-adapter transaction/fence proofs; and activate only the
four adapter-binding actions. CP04/CP05 own ContributionPolicy behavior and
activation.

Human review focus and merge ownership

Review the mutation order, owner-lock retention, database event guards,
authorized duplicate recovery, absence of existing-service substitution, and
continued lack of route/action activation. Only an authorized human may approve
and merge this PR.

Estimated code review effort: 5 (Critical) | ~120 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 31f6d

The PR adds hidden, deny-default adapter-binding lifecycle behavior without activating production routes or actions. It is mergeable with explicit owner follow-up because one concurrency test can hang on early failure, some persistence tests may pass for unrelated database errors, and returned lifecycle timestamps may not match trigger-updated values.

59-65: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Consider separating the two advisory-lock namespaces.

lock_creation_scope and lock_operation both use the single-argument pg_advisory_xact_lock(bigint) space. An operation key and a creation-scope key can therefore collide and serialize unrelated work. Use the two-argument form with a distinct classifier per namespace to remove that coupling.

187-194: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Trigger-owned lifecycle timestamps are handled inconsistently in service.py and repository.py. The update trigger in migration 0004 assigns both suspended_at and resumed_at server-side, so the database is the single authority for those two columns. The service still computes one of them in Python, and the repository never re-reads either value after the flush.

  • backend/app/modules/compensation/service.py#L187-L194: delete the select(func.clock_timestamp()) round trip and the binding.suspended_at assignment, so suspend defers to the trigger exactly as resume already does.
  • backend/app/modules/compensation/repository.py#L111-L121: refresh the binding after the second flush, so the in-memory suspended_at and resumed_at equal the persisted row, matching add_binding_and_event.

185-193: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Pin the expected constraint for each status.

Migration 0004_compensation_adapter_binding_lifecycle.py adds ck_project_compensation_adapter_bindings_status, which restricts status to active and suspended. The retired parametrization now fails on that status constraint instead of the lifecycle-shape constraint, and pytest.raises(DBAPIError) accepts either. The test name states that it proves lifecycle-shape rejection.

Add a match per status, or drop the retired case and cover the status domain in its own test.

backend/tests/compensation/test_adapter_binding_recovery.py (1)

20-21: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

BindingSeed is redeclared in two test modules. backend/tests/adapter_binding_fixtures.py exports BindingSeed, and backend/tests/compensation/test_adapter_binding_authorization_failures.py imports it from there. Two other modules declare their own copy of the same alias, so the three definitions can drift if the fixture return shape changes.

backend/tests/compensation/test_adapter_binding_database_guards.py (1)

53-107: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Assert the guard error, not any DBAPIError.

Several parametrized cases can fail for a reason other than the immutability guard. {"project_id": "replacement"} sets a random UUID that has no projects row, so the foreign key fk_project_compensation_adapter_bindings_project can raise first. {"id": "replacement"} breaks the fk_compensation_binding_event_binding reference from the already-persisted created event, so that foreign key can raise first. In both cases the test passes without proving that project_compensation_binding_update_guard rejected the change.

Match the guard message so each case proves the intended rejection.

Keep the CP02 state conditional until this PR merges.

Line 34 states that hidden adapter-binding behavior “are merged.” This table records durable state on main. docs/roadmap_status.md instead says CP02 is complete on merge. Change this row to use the same conditional state.

As per coding guidelines, "docs/roadmap_status.md is the current capability ledger" and wording must remain consistent with it.

Correct the eligibility-facts description.

Line 16 calls the actor a service actor. The supplied owner-fence implementation accepts the actor only when row.service_identity is None. Describe this value as an eligible adapter actor. Keep the CP03 identity rule out of this CP02 contract.

Pin the probe to one physical connection.

_install_participant_probe, service.create(...), and _assert_no_effect use separate transactions. The default pooled AsyncSession does not guarantee connection reuse. Bind the test session to one AsyncConnection, or assert pg_backend_pid() at each boundary. A connection change causes UndefinedTable; it does not prove that no effect exists.

Bound the event wait and clean up the task.

await authorization.entered.wait() never completes if mutate() raises before consume_adapter_binding_mutation runs. The task exception stays unobserved, so the test hangs instead of failing. Any early denial inside create or resume, for example a conflict from the owner fences, produces this state. The same applies if eligibility_change() raises: mutation stays pending and holds a database connection.

Wait on both the event and the task, and cancel the task on failure.

🌐 Web query:

SQLAlchemy 2.0 Session.get None primary key value raises or returns None

💡 Result:

In SQLAlchemy 2.0, the Session.get method returns None when the specified primary key is not found in the identity map or the database [1][2]. When you pass None as the primary key value to Session.get, it does not typically raise an exception; instead, it triggers a warning: "SAWarning: fully NULL primary key identity cannot load any object" [3]. This warning indicates that the operation cannot identify an object because a primary key identity consisting entirely of NULL values is invalid for fetching records [3]. To resolve this, ensure that the identifier passed to Session.get is a valid, non-None value [3]. If your application logic permits cases where the ID might be None (e.g., when deriving the ID from user input or a URL parameter that might be missing), you should add a check to validate the existence of the ID before calling Session.get [3].

Guard the session.get lookup when binding_id is None.

AsyncSession.get(..., None) returns None, but emits an SAWarning for a fully null primary-key identity. The guard avoids warning noise and makes the intended behavior explicit.

Add a match to the missing-event assertion.

The second block at Line 343 pins the error with match="attribution mismatch", but this first block accepts any DBAPIError. The block inserts a binding with several foreign keys and check constraints, so an unrelated violation would also satisfy the assertion and hide a regression in the compensation_binding_lifecycle_event_required guard.
