Required Documents for ITIN Application

Document Checklist

1. Identity Document (Required)

Passport is the only standalone document accepted by the IRS. It proves both identity and foreign status.

  • ✅ Any nationality accepted
  • ✅ Copy only — no original mailing required (via CAA)
  • ✅ Must be valid (not expired)
  • ✅ All pages including bio-data page

2. Supporting Tax Document (Required)

You must provide proof of your US tax reason. Choose one:

Tax Reason Acceptable Document
US dividend / investment income Form 1042-S, Form 1099-DIV
US real estate (FIRPTA) Sales contract, closing statement
US LLC / business income Schedule K-1, EIN confirmation
YouTube / AdSense Google payment statement
US scholarship / fellowship Letter from US institution
Spouse/dependent of US taxpayer US tax return (Form 1040)

3. US Visa (If Applicable)

  • Required if you entered the US on a visa
  • Include a copy of your visa page
  • F-1, J-1, B-1/B-2, H-1B, O-1, etc.

What You Do NOT Need

❌ A Social Security Number
❌ A US address
❌ A US bank account
❌ To travel to the US
❌ To visit a US embassy or consulate


Document Standards

  • All documents must be provided as clear, legible copies
  • Colour scans or photos are acceptable
  • Documents in a foreign language may require certified translation
