Adds a Signed commits section to this repo's CONTRIBUTING, per owner ruling D218. The estate policy is docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc in hyperpolymath/standards.

This repo's default branch is covered by the zero-bypass Require-Signed-Commits ruleset, and rebase-merge is off. The section tells contributors what that requires:

  • People and interactive agents sign with an SSH signing key.
  • Apps, bots and workflows write through the API, so GitHub signs their commits.
  • PRs are merged with squash.

If the file already had its own signing section, that section is replaced in place instead of adding a second one. Lines elsewhere that told people to sign with GPG are changed to match the policy (SSH for people).

This is a docs-only change. The commit was created through createCommitOnBranch, so GitHub signs it.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Updated the contribution guidance to require signed commits for changes reaching the default branch. People and interactive agents should use a registered SSH signing key; apps, bots and workflows should use the documented API-based signing options.
    • Clarified that pull requests must be squash-merged, unsigned commits prevent merging, and rebase merging is unavailable.

Walkthrough

The contribution guides now state that commits reaching the default branch must be signed. They describe signing methods for people and automated commit creators, require squash merges, and explain how to handle branches with unsigned commits.

Changes

Signed commit guidance

Layer / File(s) Summary
Signing policy and pull request procedures
.github/CONTRIBUTING.md, CONTRIBUTING.adoc
Both guides describe signing requirements, signing methods, API-based commit creation for apps, bots, and workflows, and squash-merge procedures. They also state that unsigned commits block merging and that rebase-merge is disabled.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 1 (Trivial) | ~5 minutes

Change: Other

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0c999

The signing section is placed at the wrong level in the contributor outline, and the merge guidance conflicts with tracked settings that enable rebase and merge commits. These localized inconsistencies should be aligned before contributors rely on the guidance.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0c999

The change does not modify permissions or enforcement. However, the new guidance says rebase merging is disabled while repository configuration enables it. This creates uncertainty about the documented signing guarantees, without establishing an actual signature bypass.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · observed: The new guides prescribe squash merging and state that rebase merging is disabled, while checked-in settings enable both merge-commit and rebase merging. This leaves the documented commit-authenticity workflow inconsistent with repository-controlled configuration. The configuration predates this PR; an effective signature bypass is not established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The relevant security scope is the authenticity of changes entering this repository's default branch through contributors and automated commit creators. The inspected change does not expand runtime privileges or establish exposure of other repositories or deployed services.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Checked-in branch protection requires signatures on main, supporting an existing commit-authenticity objective. It does not establish live ruleset application, zero-bypass enforcement, or the guides' assertion that every PR-branch commit is checked.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The settings file identifies itself as automatically applied repository configuration. If that application is active, its enabled rebase setting can sustain or restore behavior contrary to the new documented control; current application status is unknown.

* Merge PRs with **squash**. The ruleset checks every commit on the PR branch,
not just the result, so one unsigned commit blocks the merge. Re-create such a
branch with signed commits (`git cherry-pick -S`) and open a new PR.
Rebase-merge replays commits unsigned and is disabled.

Disable the merge modes that contradict the squash-only policy.

.github/settings.yml is repository-level configuration for the probot/settings app. It enables both allow_merge_commit and allow_rebase_merge. This contradicts the guide's squash-only instruction and its claim that rebase merging is disabled. When the settings are applied, GitHub can offer merge-commit and rebase merges.

Review comment at @CONTRIBUTING.adoc around lines 85 - 88:
Update the repository settings for allow_merge_commit and allow_rebase_merge to
disable both merge modes, keeping squash merging enabled to match the
squash-only policy documented in CONTRIBUTING.

After applying the fix, consider running `coderabbit review --agent` for local
review. Visit https://docs.coderabbit.ai/cli?utm_source=ghpr
