## Signed commits

Every commit that reaches the default branch must be signed; a ruleset refuses
unsigned pushes. Estate policy:
[SIGNING-POLICY](https://github.com/hyperpolymath/standards/blob/main/docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc).

- **People and interactive agents** sign with an SSH key registered on GitHub
as a *signing* key (`gpg.format=ssh`, `user.signingkey=<key>.pub`,
`commit.gpgsign=true`). The committer email must be verified on that account.
- **Apps, bots and workflows** never `git push` local commits. They write
through the API (`createCommitOnBranch` or the estate `signed-push` action)
so that GitHub signs each commit.
- Merge PRs with **squash**. The ruleset checks every commit on the PR branch,
not just the result, so one unsigned commit blocks the merge. Re-create such a
branch with signed commits (`git cherry-pick -S`) and open a new PR.
Rebase-merge replays commits unsigned and is disabled.

Nest Signed commits under Contributing.

== Signed commits makes this a sibling of == Contributing. The existing contribution topics use ===. Change this heading to === Signed commits so the section outline keeps the signing policy within Contributing. Asciidoctor maps these markers to different section levels. (docs.asciidoctor.org)

Review comment at @CONTRIBUTING.adoc at line 73:
Change the Signed commits heading from level two to level three so it is nested
under Contributing, matching the existing contribution-topic heading levels.

Disable the merge modes that contradict the squash-only policy.

.github/settings.yml is repository-level configuration for the probot/settings app. It enables both allow_merge_commit and allow_rebase_merge. This contradicts the guide's squash-only instruction and its claim that rebase merging is disabled. When the settings are applied, GitHub can offer merge-commit and rebase merges.

Review comment at @CONTRIBUTING.adoc around lines 85 - 88:
Update the repository settings for allow_merge_commit and allow_rebase_merge to
disable both merge modes, keeping squash merging enabled to match the
squash-only policy documented in CONTRIBUTING.
