What has changed and why?

A tag belongs to the collection of the samples it tags. Adding a sample from another collection, or one that does not exist, now raises ValueError, which the API returns as 400. Before, a sample from another collection was linked anyway, and an unknown id failed the foreign key with a 500.

add_sample_ids_to_tag_id writes the links with one INSERT ... SELECT, and the check counts that same query. On DuckDB, tag_assignment_benchmark.py drops from 5.9 s on main to 2.1 s for 100k samples.

Test fixtures that tagged across collections now create tags in the sample's collection. First of three: #2757 moves existing tag links to their sample's collection, #2758 removes the tag kind field.

How has it been tested?

  • New resolver tests: a sample from another collection, an unknown id, duplicate ids.
  • uv run pytest -n 8: the only failures are local (no s3fs or adlfs, no built webapp).
  • Postgres runs in CI's test-postgres job.

Did you update CHANGELOG.md?

  • Yes
  • Not needed (internal change)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Breaking Changes
    • Tags now contain only samples from their own collection, and tags no longer include a kind field.
    • PostgreSQL moves cross-collection samples to same-named tags in their sample’s collection. DuckDB users must re-index before creating tags.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Adding a nonexistent sample or one from another collection returns an error and leaves the tag unchanged. Adding a tag to a sample from another collection also returns an error.
  • Performance
    • Adding multiple samples to a tag is faster.

📝 Walkthrough

Bulk and single-sample tag assignment now validate that samples belong to the tag’s collection. Bulk addition uses a query-based insert and rejects unknown or cross-collection sample IDs. The changelog records tag collection changes and migration notes.

Changes: Tag collection validation and sample addition

Layer / File(s) Summary
Validate and add samples in bulk
lightly_studio/src/lightly_studio/resolvers/tag_resolver/add_sample_ids_to_tag_id.py, lightly_studio/tests/resolvers/tag_resolver/test_add_sample_ids_to_tag_id.py, lightly_studio/tests/conftest.py, lightly_studio/tests/resolvers/test_annotation_resolver.py, CHANGELOG.md
Bulk addition returns the tag for empty input. Otherwise, it checks that every distinct requested ID belongs to the tag’s collection, raises ValueError for unmatched IDs, and delegates insertion through a query. Tests cover mismatched collections, unknown IDs, and duplicate IDs. Test fixtures and annotation tag setup now use matching collections. The changelog documents collection-specific tags, HTTP 400 responses for mismatched or missing samples, migration behavior, and faster bulk tagging.
Validate single-sample assignment
lightly_studio/src/lightly_studio/resolvers/tag_resolver/add_tag_to_sample.py, lightly_studio/tests/resolvers/tag_resolver/test_add_tag_to_sample.py
Single-sample assignment raises ValueError when the sample and tag belong to different collections. A test verifies that the rejected assignment leaves the sample without tags.

- Line 15: Update the breaking-change migration note to describe the PostgreSQL
migration accurately: it consolidates same-name tags within each collection,
retains the sample tag when present, and moves links from duplicate tags to the
retained tag. Clarify that DuckDB does not run this PostgreSQL migration; remove
the claims that samples move to tags in their own collection and that DuckDB
users must re-index before creating tags.

The check counts the same query, so a sample id that does not exist
now raises ValueError instead of failing the foreign key.

The entry covers the collection rule, the removed kind field and the migration, so the later PRs of the stack need no entry of their own.
