Summary

Visitors could choose a file but were blocked by “Log in to convert”, while the page promised “No account needed”. Public tool pages also redirected to login. Guests can now convert repeatedly and open all four tools; sign-in is optional for saving future conversion history. No one-conversion limit or conversion-count quota is added.

Type of change

  • Bug fix
  • New feature
  • Documentation

What changed?

  • Remove authentication from converter readiness and public Merge PDF, Compress PDF, Batch Image Compressor and Optimize SVG pages. Account pages and history APIs remain protected.
  • Keep the action label “Convert file”, simplify upload guidance, and offer optional account links after conversion. Guests skip account-history writes; authenticated history saving no longer delays the completed download.
  • Replace the homepage typing animation with a complete static headline.
  • Add JPG/JPEG → AVIF, still GIF and HEIC across the frontend, API allowlist and worker encoders. GIF output explains the single-frame, 256-colour limit. AVIF/GIF input uploads are not advertised.
  • Add Docker build checks for AVIF and HEVC encoding, regression coverage and rollout documentation.

Testing

  • Tests pass locally: 29 frontend tests and 73 API/worker tests.
  • Lint passes.
  • Type-checking passes.
  • Production build passes (108 pages generated).
  • Tested affected conversion flows: real JPG encoding to AVIF/GIF/HEIC, dimensions after EXIF rotation and output MIME types; repeated unauthenticated API queue acceptance.
  • Guest browser regression passes: repeated mock-service conversions and actual download files with signed-out, offline and unavailable auth checks; all four tools at 390px and 1440px; actual browser image compression/ZIP download and SVG optimization/download; no browser runtime errors.

Commands: npm test, npm run build, AWS_EC2_METADATA_DISABLED=true python -m pytest services/worker services/api -q, and npm run test:guest:browser against a local server with its conversion API origin configured locally.

Checklist

  • Changes are focused on the reported feedback.
  • Updated rollout and validation documentation.
  • No secrets, credentials or sensitive data committed.
  • Changed behavior has appropriate test coverage.

Rollout notes

Deploy the API and rebuilt worker image before the frontend exposes the new JPG output options. Existing worker installations reject these targets until updated. No Supabase migrations or new dependencies are required. The live service has not been deployed or exercised by this change.

See docs/launches/guest-conversion-feedback-2026-10-03.md for rollout order and the local browser regression setup.
