fix(files): explain why an upload is too large - #474
Conversation
Initiating an upload over MAX_FILE_UPLOAD_SIZE returned the view's generic
"Invalid upload parameters.", so clients could not tell users why it failed.
InitiateUploadSerializer now rejects it with the limit in the message
({"file_size": ["File is too large. The maximum size is 5.0 GB."]}).
UploadService keeps its own check for non-REST callers.

WalkthroughThe file-size field now supports values above 2 GB. Upload initiation rejects declared sizes above the configured maximum. Upload completion checks the assembled object size against the declared size and attempts to delete the object if they differ. ChangesUpload Size Validation and Completion Integrity

The Python guidelines require annotations for all parameters and return values, plus docstrings for non-trivial functions. This validator and test method violate that contract.

…lared one MAX_FILE_UPLOAD_SIZE was only checked against the declared file_size, but neither the local part endpoint nor a presigned S3 part URL bounds the bytes actually sent, so a client could declare a small size and complete a larger file. Completion now measures the assembled object through default_storage (which also selects the handler) and deletes it unless it matches the declared size. Also annotates the new size validator (review), and makes the presigned-upload tests switch MEDIA_ROOT with override_settings so default_storage does not keep an earlier test's location. File.file_size was a PositiveIntegerField, a 32-bit integer column in Postgres, so initiating any upload over 2 GB failed with "integer out of range" even though MAX_FILE_UPLOAD_SIZE defaults to 5 GB. It is now a PositiveBigIntegerField, which graphene-django exposes as BigInt instead of Int, so fileSize also no longer errors for those files in GraphQL. Projects with a concrete File model need their own migration; the testproject one is included. Summary
Starting an upload over
MAX_FILE_UPLOAD_SIZEused to return the view's generic"Invalid upload parameters.", so clients couldn't tell users why it failed.InitiateUploadSerializernow rejects an oversize file with the limit in the message:400 {"file_size": ["File is too large. The maximum size is 5.0 GB."]}The frontend now leaves upload limits to the backend and toasts this message (FE PR below), so this message is what users see when a file is too large.
Since the backend is now the only place the limit is enforced, completion also checks the bytes actually stored. Previously a client could declare a small
file_sizeand send more.Files over 2 GB could not be uploaded at all, because
file_sizewas a 32-bit column. It is now 64-bit.Related FE PR: silverlogic/baseapp-frontend#466 (submodule), https://bitbucket.org/silverlogic/baseapp-frontend-template/pull-requests/457 (template)
Template PR: https://bitbucket.org/silverlogic/baseapp-backend-template/pull-requests/317. It only bumps the submodule pointer; merge this PR first.
What changed
InitiateUploadSerializer.validate_file_sizechecks the size againstMAX_FILE_UPLOAD_SIZE(5 GB by default) and formats the limit withfilesizeformat. The message is translatable.UploadService._validate_file_paramskeeps its own check, so non-REST callers are still protected.Completion verifies the stored size.
complete_multipart_uploadmeasures the assembled object withdefault_storage.size()and compares it with the declaredfile_size.default_storageis the storageget_upload_handler()picks the handler from, so one check covers both the local concatenation and S3. On any mismatch:Neither the local part endpoint nor a presigned S3 part URL bounds the bytes sent, so before this a client could complete a file larger than it declared and larger than
MAX_FILE_UPLOAD_SIZE.Test fix: the presigned-upload tests switch
MEDIA_ROOTwithoverride_settingsinstead ofpatch.object, sodefault_storageno longer keeps an earlier test's location.Files over 2 GB.
File.file_sizeis now aPositiveBigIntegerField(migrationtestproject/files/0004). It was a 32-bitintegercolumn in Postgres, so any upload over about 2 GB failed at initiation withinteger out of range, althoughMAX_FILE_UPLOAD_SIZEdefaults to 5 GB.BigIntinstead ofInt, sofileSizechanges type in the GraphQL schema. GraphQLIntis 32-bit too, sofileSizewould otherwise error for these files.BigIntis still a JSON number, and the frontend has no scalar mapping for it, so clients keep working; theirschema.graphqlpicks it up on the next schema download.Filemodel need their own migration. The template adds it in feature/BA-2492-improvements-to-products-viewset #317, and the README says so.UPLOAD_FLOW.mddocumented a413for this case, but the API has always returned400. The doc now shows the real response.Test plan

ATOMIC_REQUESTSrolls the service's FAILED update back together with the 400. This already happens for every failed completion, so it's separate from this change.ValueErrors inUploadService.
