Comment uploads were capped at 100MB and limited to PNG/JPG/PDF on the client, so videos and large PDFs could not be attached. The comment composer and edit no longer restrict type or size, and useFileSelect / FileUploadDropzone drop their 100MB default. Limits are left to the backend's MAX_FILE_UPLOAD_SIZE: a rejected upload now shows the backend's reason on the file and in an error toast, instead of axios' generic "Request failed with status code 400". The backend now stores File.file_size as a 64-bit integer and exposes fileSize as BigInt, since a 32-bit Int cannot hold files over 2 GB. The shared Relay config maps BigInt to number so fileSize stays typed as a number. uploadChunk turned a non-2xx part response into a bare Error, and uploadChunks
wrapped it again after retrying, so the file and toast showed "Failed to upload
chunk 0 after 3 attempts: ..." instead of the backend's reason. uploadChunk now
keeps the status and JSON body on error.response, and uploadChunks carries it
through, so getApiErrorMessage can read it.
FileUploadDropzone also treated maxFileSize={0} as unlimited; only an omitted
limit is unlimited now (review).

## Summary
Starting an upload over `MAX_FILE_UPLOAD_SIZE` used to return the view's
generic `"Invalid upload parameters."`, so clients couldn't tell users
why it failed. `InitiateUploadSerializer` now rejects an oversize file
with the limit in the message:
`400 {"file_size": ["File is too large. The maximum size is 5.0 GB."]}`
The frontend now leaves upload limits to the backend and toasts this
message (FE PR below), so this message is what users see when a file is
too large.
Since the backend is now the only place the limit is enforced,
completion also checks the bytes actually stored. Previously a client
could declare a small `file_size` and send more.
Files over 2 GB could not be uploaded at all, because `file_size` was a
32-bit column. It is now 64-bit.
**Related FE PR:**
silverlogic/baseapp-frontend#466 (submodule),
https://bitbucket.org/silverlogic/baseapp-frontend-template/pull-requests/457
(template)
**Template PR:**
https://bitbucket.org/silverlogic/baseapp-backend-template/pull-requests/317.
It only bumps the submodule pointer; merge this PR first.
## What changed
- `InitiateUploadSerializer.validate_file_size` checks the size against
`MAX_FILE_UPLOAD_SIZE` (5 GB by default) and formats the limit with
`filesizeformat`. The message is translatable.
- `UploadService._validate_file_params` keeps its own check, so non-REST
callers are still protected.
- **Completion verifies the stored size.** `complete_multipart_upload`
measures the assembled object with `default_storage.size()` and compares
it with the declared `file_size`. `default_storage` is the storage
`get_upload_handler()` picks the handler from, so one check covers both
the local concatenation and S3. On any mismatch:
- the object is deleted;
- the upload is not completed;
- the client gets a 400.
Neither the local part endpoint nor a presigned S3 part URL bounds the
bytes sent, so before this a client could complete a file larger than it
declared and larger than `MAX_FILE_UPLOAD_SIZE`.
- **Test fix:** the presigned-upload tests switch `MEDIA_ROOT` with
`override_settings` instead of `patch.object`, so `default_storage` no
longer keeps an earlier test's location.
- **Files over 2 GB.** `File.file_size` is now a
`PositiveBigIntegerField` (migration `testproject/files/0004`). It was a
32-bit `integer` column in Postgres, so any upload over about 2 GB
failed at initiation with `integer out of range`, although
`MAX_FILE_UPLOAD_SIZE` defaults to 5 GB.
- graphene-django maps the new field to `BigInt` instead of `Int`, so
`fileSize` changes type in the GraphQL schema. GraphQL `Int` is 32-bit
too, so `fileSize` would otherwise error for these files. `BigInt` is
still a JSON number, and the frontend has no scalar mapping for it, so
clients keep working; their `schema.graphql` picks it up on the next
schema download.
- **Projects with a concrete `File` model need their own migration.**
The template adds it in #317, and the README says so.
- `UPLOAD_FLOW.md` documented a `413` for this case, but the API has
always returned `400`. The doc now shows the real response.
## Test plan
**Q: Does an oversize upload explain itself?**
1. Set `MAX_FILE_UPLOAD_SIZE = 10 * 1024 * 1024`.
2. `POST /v1/files/uploads` with `file_size` = 15 MB, `num_parts` = 3,
`part_size` = 5242880.
→ The response is `400 {"file_size": ["File is too large. The maximum
size is 10.0 MB."]}`, and no storage upload is initiated. (Automated:
`test_rest_api.py::test_initiate_upload_too_large_explains_the_limit`)
**Q: Can a client complete a file larger than it declared?**
1. Initiate with `file_size` = 11 (local storage).
2. PUT 44 bytes to the part URL.
3. Complete the upload.
→ The response is 400, the upload is not COMPLETED, and nothing is left
under `files/`. (Automated:
`test_presigned_uploads.py::test_complete_rejects_more_bytes_than_declared`,
`test_rest_api.py::test_complete_upload_rejects_bytes_beyond_the_declared_size`)
**Q: Can a file over 2 GB be uploaded?**
1. `POST /v1/files/uploads` with `file_size` = 3 GB, `num_parts` = 31,
`part_size` = 100 MB.
2. Query `node(id) { ... on File { fileSize } }` for a 3 GB file.
→ The upload is created with the full size, and GraphQL returns
`fileSize` without errors. Without the fix, both fail with `integer out
of range`. (Automated:
`test_rest_api.py::test_initiate_upload_larger_than_32_bit_size`,
`test_graphql.py::test_file_size_larger_than_32_bit_int`)
**Q: Are uploads within the limit unaffected?**
→ All 162 `baseapp/files` tests pass, including initiate, complete and
abort. black, isort and flake8 are clean, and `makemigrations --check`
reports no changes.
## Out of scope (do not flag)
- **A rejected completion is left UPLOADING, not FAILED.**
`ATOMIC_REQUESTS` rolls the service's FAILED update back together with
the 400. This already happens for every failed completion, so it's
separate from this change.
- **Content-type restrictions.** None exist, and this PR adds none: the
backend accepts any type by design.
- **Messages for the other `ValueError`s in `UploadService`.** Part
count and part-size mismatches indicate a client bug, not something a
user can fix, so they keep the generic message.

1. Any file type is now uploadable, and nothing on the backend checks it (possible stored XSS) Fix (backend, BLOCKED_EXTENSIONS = {".html", ".htm", ".xhtml", ".svg", ".xml", ".js", ".mjs"}
def validate_file_name(self, value):
if os.path.splitext(value)[1].lower() in BLOCKED_EXTENSIONS:
raise serializers.ValidationError(_("This file type is not allowed."))
return valueAlso serve media with 2. The upload error can read Fix ( const data = (error as { response?: { data?: unknown } })?.response?.data
const errorMessage =
data && typeof data === 'object'
? getApiErrorMessage(error, { defaultMessage: fallbackMessage })
: fallbackMessage |
getApiErrorMessage reads the first key of response.data, so a proxy's HTML error page (502/504) showed as "<" and nested DRF errors as "[object Object]" on the file and in the toast. useChunkedUpload now shows the first string in a JSON error body, the generic message for any other body, and keeps getApiErrorMessage for errors without one (review). Added to the already-applied 3.0.1 changelog entry instead of a new changeset. Thanks, both addressed. 1. Stored XSS. Even where media lives on S3, a bucket can sit behind a subdomain of the site, so this is worth hardening. The fix is on the backend, in silverlogic/baseapp-backend#478 (template: https://bitbucket.org/silverlogic/baseapp-backend-template/pull-requests/325), which should merge before this PR:
2. Unreadable error messages. Fixed here in 1eb8c72.
New tests cover both cases and fail on the previous commit. |
…us-upload-tokens Picks up #466's readable upload error messages. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_013LkamMd6XMPeYNHbAV1DZ9
|
Follow-up on point 1: silverlogic/baseapp-backend#478 now uses an allowlist instead of a blocklist, so every uploadable type is a deliberate choice.
|
## Summary This is the frontend side of the backend's new **anonymous uploads** and **private files**, both opt-in per project. An anonymous upload has no user who owns it. When it starts, the backend returns an `uploadToken` that proves ownership. The upload hooks now keep that token and send it back when the upload is completed, aborted and attached. Logged-in uploads get no token, and nothing changes for them. **Related BE PR:** silverlogic/baseapp-backend#477 (submodule), https://bitbucket.org/silverlogic/baseapp-backend-template/pull-requests/323 (template) **Stacked on:** #466, which touches the same upload hook. Merge #466 first; this PR then retargets to `master`. **Template PR:** https://bitbucket.org/silverlogic/baseapp-frontend-template/pull-requests/461. It bumps the pointer and adds the input field to the app schemas. ## What changed - **`useChunkedUpload`:** stores `uploadToken` from the initiate response on the upload. It sends it as `X-File-Upload-Token` when completing, both fresh and on resume, and when aborting a stale upload on resume. - **`useFileUploadLogic` and `useDeferredFileAttachments`:** pass the tokens of the files being attached as `uploadTokens` to `fileAttachToTarget`. The new `uploadTokensFor()` util reads them from the upload store. - **`AttachedFileItem`:** Download is disabled when `url` is `null`. Private files return `null` for viewers who may not see them. - **`schema.graphql`:** adds only the new optional `FileAttachToTargetInput.uploadTokens: [String!]`, hand-edited to avoid unrelated schema drift. - README note and a patch changeset. ## Test plan **Q: Is the token sent back?** A: Yes, on complete when the initiate response includes one (`useChunkedUpload.test.ts`, "sends the upload token of an anonymous upload back when completing it"). `uploadTokens.test.ts` covers which tokens are passed on attach. **Q: How does an anonymous uploader see its file?** A: Through the attach response, which returns the signed `url` and `thumbnail`. After that, the file is visible to whoever can see the object it is attached to. The token is not sent on other requests. **Q: Is the logged-in path unchanged?** A: Yes. Without a token, no header is sent and `uploadTokens` is empty, and the existing tests pass with only an explicit `undefined` request config added. **Automated:** - files unit tests 44/44; - `tsc` and eslint are clean; - Relay compiles for the package and for the template's web and mobile apps. I haven't tested this by hand against a backend with anonymous uploads enabled. The backend PR covers that flow end to end with HTTP tests. ## Out of scope (do not flag) - **Mobile UI.** The token handling is in the shared hooks. Mobile picks it up through them. - **Refreshing signed URLs that expire while the page is open.** Accepted on the backend PR. 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) https://claude.ai/code/session_013LkamMd6XMPeYNHbAV1DZ9 --------- Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Preserve upload tokens for autoAttach: false.
autoAttach: false is a supported public mode. useFileUploadLogic gives the caller only relay IDs, then removes the completed file records. A later anonymous attachment cannot use uploadTokensFor, because the token is no longer in the store. Preserve the token with each relay ID, or expose it through the completion callback, until the caller attaches the upload.

Summary
Comment attachments on web were capped at 100 MB and limited to PNG/JPG/PDF on the client, so videos and large PDFs could not be attached at all. The client no longer restricts type or size; the backend decides both. The size limit is
MAX_FILE_UPLOAD_SIZE(5 GB by default). Types come from the backend's extension allowlist (media, documents and archives by default; see #478). When the backend rejects an upload, its reason appears on the file and in an error toast.Merge first: silverlogic/baseapp-backend#478 (template https://bitbucket.org/silverlogic/baseapp-backend-template/pull-requests/325). Now that the client leaves types to the backend, the backend only accepts extensions on an allowlist. It stores each file with the type its extension maps to, never the declared one, and serves risky types as downloads, which prevents stored XSS (review).
Related BE PR: silverlogic/baseapp-backend#474 (submodule), https://bitbucket.org/silverlogic/baseapp-backend-template/pull-requests/317 (template). Its explicit "File is too large…" message is what the toast shows. Without it, the toast shows the backend's older generic "Invalid upload parameters.", which is still better than the axios text shown today.
Template PR: https://bitbucket.org/silverlogic/baseapp-frontend-template/pull-requests/457. It only bumps the submodule pointer; merge this PR first.
What changed
Comment composer and comment edit: they no longer pass
maxFileSize/acceptedFileTypes. The 5-files-per-selection cap stays.useFileSelect,FileUploadDropzone: no defaultmaxFileSize(it used to be 100 MB). It stays unlimited unless a caller passes one. The dropzone subtitle only mentions a size when one is set. Only an omitted limit means unlimited, so an explicit0is enforced.useChunkedUpload: a failed initiate, part upload or complete is now handled like this:the file's error is
getApiErrorMessage(error), the backend's reason, instead of axios' "Request failed with status code 400";an error toast reads
<file name>: <reason>.a rejected part upload also shows the backend's reason.
uploadChunkkeeps the response status and JSON body onerror.response, anduploadChunkscarries it through its retries. Before, the user saw "Failed to upload chunk 0 after 3 attempts: …".This covers fresh uploads, retries and resumes. A pause or cancel is still not treated as a failure.
formatFileSize: reports GB.Readable upload errors (review). A non-JSON error body, such as a proxy's HTML 502 page, shows the generic message instead of
<. Nested DRF errors show their first message instead of[object Object].fileSizeis aBigInt. The BE PR storesFile.file_sizeas a 64-bit integer, because files over 2 GB did not fit, and GraphQL now exposesfileSizeasBigIntinstead ofInt.schema.graphqlis updated by hand for just this field and the newscalar BigInt, so no other drift comes in.@baseapp-frontend/config) mapsBigInttonumber. Without it, Relay would typefileSizeasany.Patch changesets for
