fix(files): allow uploads by extension allowlist, serve unsafe types as downloads - #478
Conversation
…nloads Any file type is uploadable since baseapp-frontend #466, and the declared content type is free text. A browser renders HTML, SVG, XML and JavaScript as pages, so one served from the app's domain, a media domain or an S3 bucket behind a subdomain runs script there (stored XSS). - InitiateUploadSerializer rejects those by extension and by content type (400 "This file type is not allowed."); UploadService checks the same for non-REST callers. BASEAPP_FILES_BLOCKED_EXTENSIONS and BASEAPP_FILES_BLOCKED_CONTENT_TYPES replace the default lists. - S3 multipart uploads store every type a browser would not display safely (anything but common images, video, audio and PDF) with Content-Disposition: attachment, so opening it downloads instead of rendering. The storage's object parameters can still override it. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_013LkamMd6XMPeYNHbAV1DZ9

WalkthroughUpload initiation now validates filename extensions against a configurable allowlist and uses the mapped content type instead of the client-declared type. Completion checks the filename’s allowed type. S3 multipart uploads set attachment disposition for types not classified as safe for inline display. File name and content type fields are read-only. Replaces the blocklist with an allowlist, so every uploadable type is a
deliberate choice instead of everything not foreseen as dangerous.
BASEAPP_FILES_ALLOWED_FILE_TYPES maps extension -> content type (a list of
extensions also works, typed via mimetypes); the default covers common media,
documents and archives, and has no SVG, HTML, XML or JavaScript.
The file is stored and served with the type the allowlist gives its extension,
never the client's declared one: otherwise photo.png declared as text/html
would be served as a page from S3. Rejections name the extension
("Files of type .html are not allowed."). S3 objects that are not
inline-safe are still stored with Content-Disposition: attachment.

Review and Sonar on the upload allowlist: - The REST files API could PATCH file_name (and file_content_type) while an upload was in progress, and the local handler names the stored file after file_name, so initiating photo.png and renaming to page.html stored a real .html file. Both fields are now read-only there, and completion re-checks the name against the allowlist. - file_content_type may be blank or missing: browsers send no type for files they don't know, and the allowlist supplies it anyway. - UploadService no longer reassigns its file_content_type parameter; the stored type is a new variable, and a declared type that differs is logged. - content_safety names the repeated image/jpeg and image/png literals. - Direct UploadService tests for the allowlist, the stored type and the completion re-check. Review on e09801a: - Completion compared the current file_name only against the allowlist, so renaming photo.png to report.pdf passed and kept image/png for a .pdf. It now requires the name's allowlisted type to equal the stored type. - The declared-vs-stored type log records the extension, not the file name, which can carry personal information. - Annotates the _initiate test helper. …t attachments (#466) ## Summary Comment attachments on web were capped at 100 MB and limited to PNG/JPG/PDF on the client, so videos and large PDFs could not be attached at all. The client no longer restricts type or size; the backend decides both. The size limit is `MAX_FILE_UPLOAD_SIZE` (5 GB by default). Types come from the backend's extension allowlist (media, documents and archives by default; see #478). When the backend rejects an upload, its reason appears on the file and in an error toast. **Merge first:** silverlogic/baseapp-backend#478 (template https://bitbucket.org/silverlogic/baseapp-backend-template/pull-requests/325). Now that the client leaves types to the backend, the backend only accepts extensions on an allowlist. It stores each file with the type its extension maps to, never the declared one, and serves risky types as downloads, which prevents stored XSS (review). **Related BE PR:** silverlogic/baseapp-backend#474 (submodule), https://bitbucket.org/silverlogic/baseapp-backend-template/pull-requests/317 (template). Its explicit "File is too large…" message is what the toast shows. Without it, the toast shows the backend's older generic "Invalid upload parameters.", which is still better than the axios text shown today. **Template PR:** https://bitbucket.org/silverlogic/baseapp-frontend-template/pull-requests/457. It only bumps the submodule pointer; merge this PR first. ## What changed - **Comment composer and comment edit:** they no longer pass `maxFileSize` / `acceptedFileTypes`. The 5-files-per-selection cap stays. - **`useFileSelect`, `FileUploadDropzone`:** no default `maxFileSize` (it used to be 100 MB). It stays unlimited unless a caller passes one. The dropzone subtitle only mentions a size when one is set. Only an omitted limit means unlimited, so an explicit `0` is enforced. - **`useChunkedUpload`:** a failed initiate, part upload or complete is now handled like this: - the file's error is `getApiErrorMessage(error)`, the backend's reason, instead of axios' "Request failed with status code 400"; - an error toast reads `<file name>: <reason>`. - a rejected **part** upload also shows the backend's reason. `uploadChunk` keeps the response status and JSON body on `error.response`, and `uploadChunks` carries it through its retries. Before, the user saw "Failed to upload chunk 0 after 3 attempts: …". This covers fresh uploads, retries and resumes. A pause or cancel is still not treated as a failure. - **`formatFileSize`:** reports GB. - **Readable upload errors (review).** A non-JSON error body, such as a proxy's HTML 502 page, shows the generic message instead of `<`. Nested DRF errors show their first message instead of `[object Object]`. - **`fileSize` is a `BigInt`.** The BE PR stores `File.file_size` as a 64-bit integer, because files over 2 GB did not fit, and GraphQL now exposes `fileSize` as `BigInt` instead of `Int`. - `schema.graphql` is updated by hand for just this field and the new `scalar BigInt`, so no other drift comes in. - The shared Relay config (`@baseapp-frontend/config`) maps `BigInt` to `number`. Without it, Relay would type `fileSize` as `any`. - Patch changesets for `components` and `config`. - **Includes #468 (merged into this branch): upload tokens for anonymous uploads.** - The upload hooks keep the `uploadToken` that initiation returns for an anonymous upload, and send it on complete and abort (`X-File-Upload-Token`) and on `fileAttachToTarget` (`uploadTokens`). - With `autoAttach: false`, `onUploadComplete` now also receives those tokens, as `(fileRelayIds, uploadTokens)`, because the completed files leave the upload store before the caller attaches them (review). One-argument callbacks keep working. - `AttachedFileItem` disables Download when `url` is null. ## Test plan **Q: Can I attach a video and a PDF over 100 MB to a comment?** 1. On a page with comments, click the attach icon in the composer. 2. Pick a `.mp4` and a 150 MB PDF, then send the comment. → Both upload and attach. The picker no longer filters to images and PDF. **Q: Is a file the backend refuses explained?** 1. On the backend, set `MAX_FILE_UPLOAD_SIZE = 10 * 1024 * 1024` (with the BE PR). 2. Attach a 15 MB file. → The chip shows "File is too large. The maximum size is 10.0 MB.", a toast reads `<name>: File is too large…`, and send stays blocked until you remove the file. (Automated: `useChunkedUpload.test.ts` "shows the backend reason for a rejected upload…") **Q: Do callers that set limits keep them?** → Passing `maxFileSize` / `acceptedFileTypes` still filters as before. (Automated: `useFileSelect.test.ts`) **Q: Does a file over 2 GB show its size?** (with the BE PR) - Attach a 3 GB video to a comment. → The file list shows "3.00 GB". Before, the backend rejected the upload with `integer out of range`. **Automated:** unit tests pass, including three new upload-error cases (also new: `uploadChunk.test.ts`, the part-upload reason in `uploadChunks` and `useChunkedUpload`), `tsc` clean (with `fileSize: number` in the generated types), eslint clean, and the Relay compiler passes for the package and for the template's web and mobile apps. ## Out of scope (do not flag) - **Mobile.** It is on a separate branch (`feature/native-comment-attachments`, #462), which picks up the same policy when it merges master. - **A total file cap per comment.** The 5-file cap applies per selection, as before. ## Accepted tradeoffs (do not re-flag) - **Rejections surface after the user picks the file, not in the picker.** The client no longer pre-checks size, so an oversize file is only rejected when the upload starts, by the initiate call. This is deliberate: the backend's setting is the single source of truth. 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) https://claude.ai/code/session_013LkamMd6XMPeYNHbAV1DZ9 <!-- This is an auto-generated comment: release notes by coderabbit.ai --> ## Summary by CodeRabbit * **New Features** * Anonymous uploads now use secure tokens to complete, resume, and attach files. * File sizes above 2 GB are supported and displayed in MB or GB. * File selection accepts any type and size by default; optional client-side limits remain available. * **Bug Fixes** * Upload failures now show clearer error messages, including backend validation details. * Private-file links expire, and download controls are disabled when a file cannot be accessed. <!-- end of auto-generated comment: release notes by coderabbit.ai --> --------- Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Summary
Since baseapp-frontend #466 stops restricting file types on the client, the backend decides what can be uploaded. Uploads are now limited to an allowlist of extensions, so every uploadable type is a deliberate choice. The default covers common media, documents and archives. Each project can replace or extend it.
Two more protections against stored XSS:
photo.pngdeclared astext/htmlcan't be served as a page.Content-Disposition: attachment. This matters because a bucket can sit behind a subdomain of the site.Raised in review on baseapp-frontend #466: silverlogic/baseapp-frontend#466 (comment). The README used to show an
ALLOWED_FILE_TYPESrecipe that projects had to wire up themselves. This makes an allowlist the built-in default.Template PR: https://bitbucket.org/silverlogic/baseapp-backend-template/pull-requests/325. It only bumps the submodule pointer; merge this PR first.
Should merge before baseapp-frontend #466.
